Composting

The goal of the Preuss School Compost Garden is to teach children the importance of composting and gardening and to inspire them to become more environmentally friendly. Engineers for a Sustainable World will work with the Ecology Club at the school, which consists of around 50-80 members that meet every week to work on the garden. This project will provide the school with a more sophisticated compost structure and an efficient irrigation system. By giving the children an introduction and opportunity to become environmentally conscious, ESW and the Ecology Club hopes to inspire them to continue ecologically friendly activities like composting in the future.

The Compost Bin Group of ESW is currently working on building compost bins that transfer food compost into fertile dirt. They have created two designs of the compost bin: regular and worm-based. The regular compost bin is designed for the natural food degradation process of composting. The worm compost bin is one in which food compost is digested by worms becoming acid-neutralized soil enriched with nutrients. The compost bins are located on the UC San Diego campus in the NC garden near Che Cafe. They are in need of ideas and designs to improve the quality of the bins and volunteers to help build the bins, work, and plant in the NC garden.
