The purpose of this project is to create a machine that uses hexane to efficiently extract oil from used coffee grounds collected from campus coffee shops. This extracted oil will later be converted into biodiesel, providing UCSD’s Greenline buses with another source of fuel. After the oil extraction process, the group will be donating the leftover coffee grounds to the Neighborhood Garden, located behind the Che Cafe, to use as fertilizer. By creating fuel from a source that would otherwise be disposed of and using the leftover product as fertilizer, ESW aims to divert unnecessary waste from landfills.
Goals:
1) Build a machine that extracts oil with very little to no hexane loss.
